RICHMOND, Va. – Joey Giordano has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance on March 7, the league office announced Tuesday. This is program's first weekly honor of the season and Giordano's first of his career.
In his outing against Binghamton (March 7), an 8-1 Spider victory, the sophomore lefty took a no-hitter through six and a third of an inning, working around some traffic in the second inning after allowing a walk and a Spider throwing error. The Montvale, N.J. native then retired the Bearcats in order over the next three innings. In the sixth, he hit one batter but got out of trouble with a strikeout.
After striking out the first batter in the seventh, Giordano allowed the Bearcats only run of the day on a solo home run. He then ended the frame with back-to-back strikeouts to finish his day on the mound with a career-high 12 strikeouts.
On the season, Giordano is one of 16 pitchers in NCAA Division 1 to have four wins in four starts and just one of three sophomores do so in the nation. He has a 2.70 ERA in 23.1 innings of work on the season, allowing seven runs on 16 hits and five walks with 30 strikeouts.
