RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team fell to Old Dominion University Wednesday 7-2 at Pitt Field.
UR, now 12-13 on the season and 1-5 in Atlantic 10 Conference action, returns to Pitt Field Friday to host the Rhode Island Rams for a conference weekend series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
After retiring the Monarchs in order to start the game, UR starter Glenn Smith allowed a two-run home run in the top of the second. Smith went two innings, allowing two hits on two runs with three strikeouts.
Noah Haught tossed a scoreless third, working around a hit and a walk while collecting a strikeout in his first collegiate appearance on the mound. Christian Dray followed with his own scoreless frame, allowing two walks and a hit batter with a strikeout. Chase Gruber retired the Monarchs in order, picking up two strikeouts, in the fifth inning.
While the Spiders had runners reach the base paths in each of the first four innings, via walks or hit batters, RJ Johnson Jr. collected the Spiders first hit in the fifth with a double to left center. Two batters later, Johnson Jr. scored on a ground ball by Evan Wilson to the Monarchs first baseman that allowed Wilson to reach via an error.
After Angel Santiago-Cruz retired all three ODU batters in the sixth, the Spiders tied the game in the bottom half of the frame. Sean Scanlon collected his own double to lead off the inning. RJ Rickabaugh drew a walk before Chris Schaller beat out a bunt to load the bases. Ryan Recio picked up Scanlon from third with a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 2-all.
The ODU offense chipped away at Richmond's pitchers. The Monarchs tallied a single run in the seventh and eighth on two hits in each frame to go up 4-2. In the top of the ninth, ODU tallied three runs on three hits as UR used three pitchers in the inning.
