Spider Baseball Drops Series Opener to Binghamton
03/06/2026 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a strong start, the University of Richmond baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to Binghamton Friday at Pitt Field.
Richmond, 8-6 on the season, and Binghamton, 3-7 on the season, return for game two of the series Saturday at Pitt Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Pitt Field.
Michael Elko put the Spiders on the board first with a solo home run over the right field pavilion in the bottom of the first inning. Elko now has three home runs on the season, just one shy of Dylan Winebrenner and Ryan Recio's four blasts each.
UR starter Glenn Smith worked around some traffic in the first two innings and didn't allow a run while striking out two. Smith finished the day going five and two-thirds of an inning, scattering two runs on three hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
In the fourth, Elko worked an eight-pitch walk to reach base. He then stole second and third before scoring on Grant Kennedy's bloop base hit into short right field to give UR a 2-1 lead.
Binghamton answered in the sixth with a solo home run of their own to tie the game. Then the Bearcats tacked on three more runs in the seventh.
Keane Hyer (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in an inning-plus of work. Bijan Anvar went one and one third of an inning, allowing two hits and getting a strikeout. Dray finished the ninth by retiring the Bearcats in order.
The Spiders had runners on in all but two innings, including the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings but left six total base runners on. Four of six batters left on were in scoring position.
