No. 23 Richmond Wins Ninth Straight; Rode Sets Single-Game Draw Control Record

RICHMOND, Va. – No. 23 Richmond defeated George Washington 19-6 on Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium. The Spiders won their ninth straight game, and Meghan Rode set a program single-game record with 18 draw controls.

With the win, Richmond improved to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Revolutionaries fell to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in league action. The Spiders extended their lead in the all-time series to 21-5.

Alexis Morton (five goals) and Anya Wardle (two goals, three assists) led the team with five points each. Rode (one goal, three assists) and Juliana Stanley (four goals) each tallied four points. Bridget Lonsinger recorded three points on two goals and one assist. Charlotte Edwards scored two goals, and Stella Axe added two points on one goal and one assist. Ella Grimes and Cece Lesperance each scored a goal.

Chloe Conti led the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Richmond led in multiple statistical categories, including shots (37-16), shots on goal (21-10), ground balls (21-14) and draw controls (21-6). The Spiders also went 12-for-13 on clears.

In the draw circle, Rode led the way with a program-record 18 draw controls. Axe collected two, and Riley Marks added one.

In goal, Abby Francioli earned the win with five saves in 45 minutes. Maggie Mullen recorded one save in 8:21, and Ally Gouveia also saw action.

The teams traded goals early before Richmond scored three straight to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spiders outscored George Washington 6-1 in the second quarter to lead 10-2 at halftime.
George Washington opened the second half with a goal, but Richmond responded with three straight to extend the lead to 13-3. After both teams exchanged goals, the Spiders pushed the margin to 14-4. Richmond closed the game by outscoring the Revolutionaries 5-2 in the fourth quarter to secure the 19-6 victory.
The Spiders will host James Madison on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for it's last non-conference game of the regular season.Â
