05/14/2026 | Baseball
DALLAS – University of Richmond baseball's Joey Giordano has been named as a 2026 Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, National Semifinalist. This prestigious award in college baseball has been given to the top player based on two rounds of voting by NCBWA members since 1987.
Giordano is one of 48 semifinalists among the top NCAA Division I baseball players and the only representative from an Atlantic 10 Conference program. He is also one of 15 starting pitchers among the nominees.
Giordano, in his first full season of action after UCL reconstruction surgery in his senior year of high school, heads into the final weekend of the season with an 11-0 record to lead the country.
The Montvale, NJ native leads the A-10 with a 3.08 ERA and third with a 1.16 WHIP. He has struck out 62 batters and allowed 63 hits and 22 walks in 73.0 innings pitched while holding his opponents to a .228 average at the plate.
Giordano is the second-straight Spider to be named as a semifinalist. Last season, third baseman Brady O'Brien was also named as a semifinalist.
The Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, is given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. The trophy is regarded as baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage – all qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
NCBWA voting membership includes writers, broadcasters and publicists. Designed to promote and publicize college baseball, it is the sport's only college media-related organization, founded in 1962.
