Spider Baseball Sweeps Billikens; Capture 2-Seed in A-10 Championship

With the victory, Richmond secured the second seed and a first round bye in the 2026 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. Richmond will face the winner between VCU and Davidson, on Thursday, May 21 at 3 PM at Capital One Park. UR's 20-10 record in A-10 games is the best conference record since 2007 and the most wins in the league since 2002.
On a staff day on the mound, Richmond used seven pitchers to get through all nine innings of action. Chayse Gruber (4-1) collected his second win of the weekend after tossing four and a third of an inning, scattering four runs on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
After Saint Louis put up five runs on two hits, two errors and three walks in the first inning, Richmond responded with an eight-run frame. Noah Haught pushed in the first run of the inning with a bases loaded single to left. Sean Scanlon, after reaching on a walk, scored on Evan Wilson's ground out. Aidan O'Keefe came in on a Billikens miscue before RJ Johnson Jr. tallied his first of four hits on the day scoring Haught. Michael Elko scored on RJ Rickabaugh's sacrifice fly, before Chris Schaller, in his second at bat of the frame, hit a three-run home run to put the Spiders up 8-5.
Saint Louis tied the game in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run and a single run in the third to go up 9-8.
Ryan Recio hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to score Winebrenner to tie the game at 9-all in the top of the fourth.
The Billikens tallied a seven run fourth inning on six hits, two walks, a hit batter and a Spider miscue to make it 16-9.
Richmond bats exploded for 10 runs in the top of the ninth. After back-to-back walks drawn by Elko and Wilson to start the frame, Winebrenner brought in Wilson with a sharp hit through the infield. Johnson Jr. launched a three-run home run over the right field wall to push the Spiders within three at 16-13. UR loaded the bases with a walk, hit batter and a base hit before Haught scored two with a base hit to right. In his second plate appearance in the frame, Wilson pushed in the tying run with a hit to left. With the bases loaded again, Winebrenner forced in a run when he drew a walk before Johnson Jr. tallied two more RBI with a hit to right to go up three, 19-16.
The lead see-sawed to the Billikens scoring four runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batters, for a 20-19.
Schaller answers in the top of the sixth with a solo home run, 20-20. Wilson doubled to score O'Keefe from first to take the lead, 21-20.
After Gruber kept SLU off the board, Richmond added five more runs to extend the lead in the seventh, 26-20. Winebrenner tallied his second of three walks to start the frame before scoring on Rickabaugh's base hit to left. Johnson Jr. scored on O'Keefe's sacrifice fly before Wilson cleared the bases with his second double of the day.
The Billikens added two runs in the seventh and two in the ninth, but Gruber got the strikeout to capture the win for Richmond.
