University of Richmond head women's soccer coach Marty Beall announced the hiring of Scott Letts to his staff as the assistant coach in January 2022. With over 10 years of college coaching experience, Letts joins the Spiders after most recently serving simultaneously as head coach of the Concord Fire ECNL 07/08 girls based in Atlanta and a staff coach for the Georgia Olympic Development Program.
Â
Originating from Nottingham, England, his primary responsibilities at Richmond will be player development and recruiting.
Â
"I'm thrilled that Scott is joining our staff. I've had the pleasure of seeing him in action in various situations for the past four years, and this guy is a great coach," said Beall. "With his experience in the Atlantic 10 and his ability to develop players, it was an easy decision to bring Scott back to Richmond. We are looking forward to working with Scott as we continue to elevate our players and this Spider soccer program."
Â
No stranger to Richmond, Letts was an assistant coach at crosstown rival VCU from 2013-2018 while also holding coaching positions with Richmond United ECNL, the Richmond Strikers, and the Richmond Kickers.
Â
"I'd like to thank Marty Beall and Kelly Grant for the opportunity to be part of the Spider program," said Letts. "I've always thought of Richmond as my second home, and I'm grateful for the opportunity. The University of Richmond has an excellent reputation as an academic institution and a beautiful campus that makes it a great destination for any student-athlete."
Â
Prior to his time in Georgia, Letts served as an assistant coach and the head of recruiting at Central Michigan from April 2020 to February 2021. He was responsible for recruiting, creating and implementing practice programs and workouts, video analysis, and monitoring academic progress as well as improving alumni relations and public relations.
Â
Letts worked for the Virginia Development Academy as the girls' ECNL director and director of college placement from May 2018 to January 2020. In that role, he led the girls' program as it entered the ECNL, directed the college selection process for both the boys and girls, and assisted with the women's U-23 team.
Â
Before working for the VDA, Letts spent five years as an assistant coach at VCU from July 2013 to May 2018. In his first season with the Rams, he helped guide the team to an unbeaten streak of nine games en route to a third-straight trip to the conference tournament. In 2014, VCU saw three players earn all-conference honors and one earn a spot on the all-rookie team. Defensively, VCU posted a 0.47 GAA in conference play, which was the second-best in the league.
Â
Letts was a four-year starter at Marshall University before beginning his college coaching career with the Herd in August 2008 as an assistant coach until July 2013. He received a bachelor's degree in sports management and marketing and a master's degree in adult technical education, all from Marshall.
Â
As a player, Letts represented Great Britain in the world student games twice, first in Turkey in 2002 and then against In Thailand in 2006. His professional playing experience includes stints with Nottingham Forest Football Club, Rotherham United, and Chesterfield Football Club.
Letts holds certifications from the United States Soccer Federation, National Coaches Association of America, English Football Association, and World Football Academy.
