Richmond Women's Basketball Posts a 74-67 Win at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Spider sophomore forward Cammy Desmond (Midlothian, Va./James River) paced three players in double figures with a team-high 17 points to pace Richmond to a 74-67 victory at Liberty tonight at the Vinnes Center. Joining Desmond in double figures was senior forward Lizz Greene (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll), who delivered a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double. Senior forward Candice Edwards (Newport News, Va./Menchville) posted 13 points and corralled eight rebounds.
With the win, Richmond improves to 2-0 on the campaign, marking the program's best start since the 1996-97 season. Meanwhile, Liberty remains winless at 0-2. Flame sophomore forward Michelle Fricke led all scorers with 19 points, while junior guard Becky Blesch added 11 points.
Trailing 24-23 with 6:38 remaining in the opening half, the Spiders went on a 23-7 run and owned a 46-31 advantage heading into intermission. Desmond supplied 10 points in that span, while junior guard Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) scored five points in the spurt. Twelve of the Spiders 23 points came from beyond the arc. In the opening half, Richmond shot 36.8 percent from three-point territory and out-rebounded Liberty, 32-24. Edwards snared a game-high seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. In addition, the Spiders forced 12 Flame turnovers in the first half.
Liberty opened the second half scoring 11 unanswered points to close the margin to 46-42 with 16:56 remaining. Fricke supplied six points in that span. Following cold Spider perimeter shooting, Liberty knotted the contest at 55-55 following a free throw by sophomore center Meribeth Feenstra.
The Spiders answered with a mini-run (5-0) of their own, capped by a big three-pointer by Greene at the 9:32 mark. Liberty closed the margin to two points (62-60) and Richmond proceeded to answer with an 11-3 run capped by an Edwards trey with 2:48 to go.
Liberty shot 53.7 percent (22-41) from the free throw line and 16.7 (3-of-18) from beyond the arc for the game.
Richmond returns to action on Friday, November 24, facing Rice in the first round of the UNC Greensboro Marriott Classic at 5 p.m. The Spiders will face either UNC Greensboro or Manhattan in the consolation/championship game slated for Saturday November 25 at 1/3 p.m.
