Blacksburg, Virginia - The Virginia Tech Hokies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the University of Richmond Spiders 5-4 this afternoon in Blacksburg.
The Hokies improved to 6-7, while the Spiders fell to 6-9.
With the Spiders leading 4-3, Richmond senior righthander Bobby Basham (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) walked the first two Hokies in the bottom of the ninth. Junior righthander Andy Givens (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) entered in relief for the Spiders. Virginia Tech used a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up and used a suicide squeeze to tie the game, with the batter reaching on an error by Givens. An intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. Freshman lefthander Thomas Martin (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) came in and got a force out at the plate for the second out, but a single by junior first baseman John West gave the Hokies the 5-4 win.
The Spiders scored once in the top of the first inning. Freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led off the game with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by freshman catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep).
Tidball's RBI single in the third gave the Spiders a 2-0 lead. A wild pitch later in the inning brought home the third run for Richmond. The Spiders added a run in the sixth on a single by senior outfielder Matt Reid (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), who stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a groundout by Pritz.
The Hokies used four singles, a walk and a wild pitch to score three times in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the margin to 4-3, setting up the ninth inning heroics.
Tidball had four hits and two RBI for the Spiders. Pritz and sophomore shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) had two hits and scored one run for Richmond.
The Spiders will host Pace on Tuesday, March 13 at 2:30 pm at Pitt Field.
