McGirr Earns Win In 6-2 CAA Victory Over Old Dominion

Richmond, Virginia - Sophomore righthander Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) hurled six strong innings and senior John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) had three hits and two RBI as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the Old Dominion University Monarchs 6-2 at Pitt Field in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. Richmond evened its record at 9-9, while the Monarchs fell to 6-14.
Richmond scored four times in the bottom of the first as Nathans had an RBI single and also scored.
The Monarchs scored an unearned run in the fourth. Freshman first baseman Mark Michael (Gobbstown, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) singled and scored on a passed ball.
The Spiders added a run in the fifth. With one out, sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) doubled. He came around to scored on an RBI double by Nathans. Richmond scored a run in the sixth on a home run by senior outfielder Ryan Martin (Mahwah, N.J./Milford Academy), his second of the spring, and the Spiders led 6-1. Old Dominion scored its final in the seventh on an RBI single by freshman shortstop Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, Md./Mount St. Joseph's).
McGirr allowed six hits in his six innings of work, all singles. He walked none and struck out six in raising his record to 3-1. Senior righthander Brian Lane (Crofton, Md./Arundel) hurled the final three inning to earn his first save of the season.
Richmond and Old Dominion will meet again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Pitt Field.
