McGirr Fires Three-Hitter, Spiders Fall 1-0

Charlottesville, Va. - Richmond sophomore righthander Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) surrendered just three hits to the Virginia Cavaliers, but two were back-to-back to plate the only run of the game as the Cavs defeated the Richmond Spiders 1-0 this afternoon in Charlottesville.
Virginia improved to 16-10, while the Spiders fell to 10-15.
McGirr (3-3) notched his second complete game of the season, going 8.0 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. He allowed only one runner past second base, and that was the deciding run. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, sophomore outfielder Chris Sweet singled to short on an 0-2 pitch. Sophomore outfielder Doug Vroman followed with a double to right-center that scored sweet with the only run of the contest.
Richmond had six hits and stranded six runners, including a man at third base in the top of the fourth. Sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) had two of Richmond's hits and also walked once.
Freshman righthander Canon Hickman (2-2) was the starter and winner for the Cavaliers, going the distance and allowing six hits, one walk and striking out seven.
The Spiders will host Virginia Tech on Wednesday, March 28 at 3:00 pm at Pitt Field.
