Spiders Tame Tigers 7-1

Richmond, Virginia - Freshman righthander Tim Stauffer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Central Catholic) allowed three hits over seven innings and junior third baseman Mike Gula (Austin, Tex/Westwood) had two hits and two RBI as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the Towson Tigers 7-1 at Pitt Field. Richmond improved to 6-8, while the Tigers fell to 1-1.
Stauffer surrendered one run over seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts. The only run came on a homer by junior first baseman Greg Davies in the second, his first of the season.
Richmond tied the game in the bottom of the second. Senior DH Chad Balog (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) hit a one-out single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Gula.
The Spiders took the lead in the bottom of the third. Freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led off with a triple and scored on a triple by sophomore shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore). Reaver scored on a fielder's choice by senior outfielder Manny Cicchiello (Weathersfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee).
Richmond scored two more in the fourth. With two outs, Gula walked and scored on a triple by freshman second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum). LeNoir then scored on a bunt single by Pritz.
The Spiders tallied their final two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by senior catcher John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) and Gula.
Richmond will travel to Virginia Tech on Monday, March 12 for a 2:30 pm contest with the Hokies.
