McGirr Flirts With No-Hitter, Spiders Romp 14-3 Over Patriots

Fairfax, Virginia - Sophomore righthander Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and freshman outfielder Jim O'Leary (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) went 4-4 with five RBI as the Richmond Spiders defeated the George Mason Patriots 14-3 to sweep their three-game Colonial Athletic Association series. Richmond has now won five straight games and seven of the past eight. The Spiders improved to 17-16 overall, their first time over .500 this season. Richmond is 5-6 in the CAA. George Mason fell to 14-18 overall and 1-7 in the CAA.
Through the first six innings, McGirr walked one Patriot and saw one other reach on an error. Freshman outfielder Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers) made a diving catch in left against second baseman Jeff Palumbo for the first out in the seventh. McGirr then walked DH Stephen Johnson. After another fly out, McGirr walked two more to load the bases. Outfielder Scott Yeager then singled to the hole at short to breakup the no-hitter and the shutout. Pinch-hitter Brad Santmyer then singled to center to drive in two runs and complete the scoring for the Patriots.
McGirr threw 100 pitches in his seven innings of work Along with the two singles, he walked four and struck out five.
Richmond pounded out 15 hits and scored in six of its nine trips to the plate. O'Leary had one single in 1-14 at bats this season coming into the game and had not driven in a run this spring. He had an RBI double and scored in Richmond's three-run second inning. O'Leary launched a two-run homer to left in the fifth. He added a two-run double in the sixth and he singled and scored in the ninth.
Freshman catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) had three hits for the Spiders, including a pair of doubles, and he scored twice and knocked in two. Freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) also had three hits for Richmond.
