Harrisonburg, Va. - The Spiders (5-3) took a heartbreaking loss at the hands of the 17th-ranked James Madison Dukes (4-4) in Friday night field hockey action. The Spiders down three at the half scored two unanswered in the second, but were unable to net a tying goal as time expired, final score 3-2.
It was a tail of two halves, as Richmond opened the game allowing three goals during the last 20 minutes of the period. The Spiders came out smoking early in the second going touching the back of the net twice in the span of 4:06. Sophomore Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) scored Richmond's first goal, ending a season long drought of five scoreless periods. Sophomore Courtenay Martin (Anchorage, Ky./Louisville Collegiate) was credited with the assist. Senior Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) then tallied her sixth goal of the season on a penalty stroke bringing the Spider's within one. Unfortunately that is as close as the Spiders would come.
Richmond clawed their way back, however was still out shot 14 to 4 in the entire game. Freshman goal tender Jennifer Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) had another rough outing, but played with a veteran's poise in the second half not allowing a goal on five total saves.
Richmond takes its second road loss of the season and third overall. The Spiders return to action at 1:00p.m. on Sunday September 30 when the take on the second ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
