No. 22 Baseball Blanks Duquesne In Doubleheader

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Complete-game shutouts from sophomore Tim Stauffer and junior Mike McGirr propelled 22nd-ranked University of Richmond to an Atlantic 10 doubleheader sweep - 10-0, 4-0 - against Duquesne at Pitt Field. With his win in the first game, Stauffer tied the all-time Richmond mark for wins in a season (11).
In the series opener, Stauffer threw his eighth complete game and third shutout in a four-hit gem. The Saratoga Springs, N.Y. native leads the nation in wins. Sophomore short stop Matt Craig led the offense by going 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. The Dallas, Texas native belted a three-run homer in the sixth.
In game two, Richmond (31-4, 11-0 Atlantic 10) again used strong pitching and timely hitting for a 4-0 win. Starter Mike McGirr improved to 8-1 with his first shutout of the season. Junior David Reaver increased his hit streak to 28 games and drove in a pair to pace the offense.
GAME 1
After two scoreless innings, the Spiders broke through with two runs off Duquesne starter Bob Reifschneider. David Reaver scored the game's first tallies on singles from Reaver and Craig in the third.
Three more runs in the third increased the lead to 5-0. Three consecutive singles from Adam Tidball, Jim Fasano and Bobby LeNoir scored the first two runs and a single to right center from Pritz scored the inning's final run.
Stauffer found himself in trouble in the fifth as the Dukes' mounted first and second with no outs. The right-hander responded by striking out the side, on his way to nine whiffs in the game. The Spiders capitalized on the momentum and scored two unearned runs in their half of the fifth. Craig and Chiaravalloti came home in the frame in increase the advantage to 7-0.
Craig's big fly to right center, a three-run shot, accounted for the final runs in the sixth.
Pritz, Reaver and Craig all scored two runs for the Spiders. Four Dukes each collected one hit for the visitors. Reifschneider fell to 3-3 after allowing seven runs, four earned, in 5.0
GAME 2
The Spiders jumped on top early in game two with a pair of runs in the first. Pritz led off the frame with an infield single and scored on a Reaver double to right center. The hit increased Reaver's hit streak to 28 games. The third baseman later scored on a Vito Chiaravalloti sacrifice fly to center.
Richmond increased its lead to 3-0 when Cronin singled and scored on another Reaver double in the third. In the sixth, Dolan singled and scored on a Bobby LeNoir sac fly to give the Spiders a 4-0 lead heading into the final inning.
McGirr allowed just five hits in his third complete game of the season, his first shutout. Reaver and Dolan both collected two hits for the Spiders. Duquesne starter Craig Antolik fell to 2-3 after allowing four runs on seven hits.
Richmond and Duquesne will complete their Atlantic 10 series tomorrow at Noon.
