RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped the Atlantic 10 Conference series opener to the University of Dayton 10-2 Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Richmond, now 20-18 on the season and 8-8 in league play, and Dayton, 21-16 on the year and 6-10 in conference action, return to Pitt Field for game two of the conference series Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
The Flyers jumped on Spiders starter Chase Topolski from the start. Dayton tagged him for five runs on five hits, two walks, two hit batters, a wild pitch and four strikeouts in three plus innings, Topolski's shortest start of the season.
Chayse Gruber took over in the fourth, allowing one inherited run in. He allowed one base runner on in the fifth but kept the Flyers off the board before giving up a two-run home run to right field in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Dylan Winebrenner extended his hit streak to 12-straight games with a base hit to right center and moved up to third on RJ Johnson Jr's double to right. Chris Schaller picked up Winebrenner with a hit to left to tally the Spiders first run of the game. RJ Rickabaugh brought in Johnson Jr. with a sacrifice fly to deep center to make it 7-2.
Bijan Anvar tossed a scoreless seventh inning, including ending the frame with a strikeout and caught stealing at second to erase the inherited base runner from Gruber.
Dylan Siesky was tagged with three runs on one hit, one walk and a hit batter while only registering one out. Kellan Heney hit the one batter he faced before Sam Young got out of the eighth, allowing one hit and striking out one. Paul Witkop tossed a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.
