UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond field hockey team had three players named to the 2002 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad as announced today by the group. Seniors Cathy Burgess (Richmond, Va.) and Kristin Gavin (Roseland, N.J.) along with freshman Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) were all honored for their academic achievement.
Burgess, majoring in Spanish with a minor in education, appeared in 16 games and made two starts during her career at Richmond. She earned her first career start as a junior and played in six games this past season on the defensive end. Burgess maintains a 3.45 cumulative GPA.
A Sociology major with a minor in Spanish, Gavin appeared in every Richmond contest throughout her four year career and started 78 of the 81 games. Gavin, a co-captain her senior year, recorded three goals and three assists in 2002. The forward/midfielder totaled 20 points while at Richmond. Gavin averages a 3.12 GPA.
Swartz, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, led the Atlantic 10 with 17 wins, including nine shutouts, and a 1.26 GAA, which ranked 11th in the nation. In Atlantic 10 action, Swartz led all goalies with a save percentage of .850 and a GAA of 0.50. The undeclared major currently holds a 3.70 GPA.
