UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Allie Howard of the University of Richmond field hockey team was selected as an alternate to the Under 21 National team at the US Field Hockey A-Camp trials January 2-4 in Virginia Beach. This marks the first time a Richmond player has been selected as an alternate to the team. Along with Howard, four Spider student-athletes attended the trials including junior Lesley Russell, sophomores Michelle La Force and Michelle Swartz and freshman Amanda Florio.
The Spider student-athletes earned invitations to A Camp through performances in U.S. Field Hockey programs such as 2003 junior teams, B Camp, the USA Field Hockey Summer League, the National Hockey Festival and invitations from the USA Field Hockey coaching staff.
At A-Camp, the selected athletes participated in an intensive weekend of skill and tactics training capped by selections to the 2004 U.S. teams. Upon selection the U.S. U21 team will train regularly at regional sites and compete in an international tour.
The honor allows Howard to work toward the opportunity to travel and compete with the Junior Pan American Hockey team when they go to Santiago Chile next year.
