PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Richmond field hockey team used an early goal off a penalty stroke to top Princeton Sunday, 1-0, in New Jersey. The win, Richmond's first-ever against the Tigers, moves the Spiders to 8-2, while Princeton drops to 3-7.
Just under three minutes into the game, Richmond's junior Holly Cram scored her 10th goal of the season putting the Spiders in front. Cram's goal, her fourth game-winner of the season, came by way of a penalty corner and was assisted by junior Michelle La Force. The corner goal marked the eighth time this season the Spiders have converted a penalty corner attempt.
Richmond went on to outshoot the Tigers 7-3 in the first half but could not convert anymore of their seven first-half penalty corners.
Princeton, trailing 1-0 at halftime, came out firing in the second half. The Tigers out-cornered the Spiders 6-0 and outshot them 11-2. Junior Michelle Swartz proved to be the difference for Richmond stopping five second-half attempts on goal to earn her second consecutive shutout, and fifth on the season.
Cram led the way for Richmond by taking five shots on the day. Senior Laura Hur fired two attempts and juniors Whitney Wells and Colleen Wevodau each recorded one shot.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid in the all-time series with Princeton, and was the first time the Spiders were victorious against the Tigers on the road.
Richmond opens Atlantic 10 Conference play next weekend when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., for games at Temple and Saint Joseph's. The Spiders take on Temple at noon Saturday, Oct. 9, to begin their weekend, then make their way Sunday, Oct. 10, to Finnesey Field at 2 p.m. to take on Saint Joseph's.
