UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond Field Hockey team scored a single-game record 12 goals en route to beat Monmouth, 12-0, in front of 192 fans at Crenshaw Field Saturday afternoon. The opening day win moves Richmond's record to 1-0 on the season and marks its fourth-straight opening day win.
"I thought it was a really good start to our season. The biggest thing is we learned to finish," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We were able to put the ball away. For this early in the season it is a great thing to start scoring."
Junior Holly Cram led the way with four goals in the scoring barrage, tying Heather Rice's single-game scoring record of four goals which she accomplished twice in 2000. Freshman Tara Kelly accounted for three of the Spiders' dozen scores while freshman Shannon Taylor recorded two goals. Juniors Allie Howard and Whitney Wells along with sophomore Amanda Florio also netted one goal each.
"I think it was a complete team effort and was made possible by having people in the right place at the right time," Bradley said. "Our speed allowed us to eliminate people and create shot opportunities."
The Spiders, who had a 2-0 lead at halftime, took a total of 20 shots to the Hawks' three attempts in the first half. It was more of the same in the second half as Richmond tallied 10 goals on 32 shots and did not allow Monmouth to get a single shot off.
Junior Michelle Swartz faced only one shot the entire game, turning it away for her first shutout of the season and 30th of her career.
Richmond resumes it schedule Friday, Sept. 3, when it travels to Syracuse, N.Y., to face Pacific. The Spiders then take on host Syracuse Sept. 5 to round out next weekend's action.
Game Notes: Richmond's 12 goals eclipsed a five year old school record for goals in a single game (8) done twice - vs. Appalachian State (10/13/99) and vs. Longwood (9/9/91)... Holly Cram's four goals tied the single-game scoring mark held by Heather Rice. Rice scored four goals twice in 2000.
