UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond field hockey team remained unbeaten after topping Syracuse, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y. The victory improves the Spiders' record to 3-0 while the Orange drop to 0-2.
"I thought Syracuse played an excellent game," head coach Ange Bradley said. "I did not think we came out with the intensity we needed to. We were fortunate that Michelle (Swartz) had a great game in goal."
Sophomore Amanda Florio opened the Richmond attack by sending a rebound past the SU goalkeeper at the 5:56 mark for her second goal of the season. Junior Holly Cram followed with an unassisted goal, her sixth score of the season, at the 16:21 point to give the Spiders a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Swartz, a junior from Severna Park, Md., came up big in the first half. As Richmond scored the two goals, she turned away six Orange attempts in the first 35 minutes. With a second half lead of 2-0 Swartz managed to preserve her third-straight shutout of 2004 by making one save in the final half.
"Michelle played a great game," Bradley said. "She stepped up to hold the shutout and gave us a chance to get the win."
Richmond has now out-shot its opponents 81-17 and has a 17-0 advantage in the goals scored category, averaging more than five goals a game.
Richmond will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 8, when it heads to cross-town rival VCU for a match set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
