WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of Richmond field hockey team moved its season-opening win streak to four by topping William and Mary, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va.
Richmond opened the game's scoring less than three minutes in as junior Whitney Wells put in a rebound off a shot from junior Holly Cram. Twenty-five minutes later the Tribe answered when senior Ginny Sutton scored off a penalty corner. The William and Mary goal was the first scored on Richmond's junior Michelle Swartz this season.
The Spiders regained their lead early in the second half as Cram netted her seventh goal of the season on a 15-yard shot. William and Mary quickly answered with its second goal of the game tying the score at 2-2.
With just over four minutes left in regulation Cram netted her second goal of the day on a pass from Shannon Taylor for the game-winner.
The Spiders outshot the Tribe 15-6, including a 12-1 advantage in the second half. Richmond limited William and Mary to just three penalty corners on the day. Swartz finished her day in goal with three saves, all in the first half, to earn her fourth consecutive win in 2004.
Richmond will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 15, when it hosts Virginia at Crenshaw Field on the Spider campus. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
