UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team made the most of nine shots to top Pacific, 3-0, in Syracuse, N.Y., Friday night. The win at J.S. Coyne Field moved the Spiders' record to 2-0 on the season while Pacific evened its mark at 2-2.
"I have to give credit to Pacific because they played a great game," head coach Ange Bradley said. "They are a great team defensively and they made us work for the opportunities we got."
Juniors Holly Cram and Whitney Wells combined for eight points on the night as Cram scored once and provided the assists on Wells' two goals. The Spiders fired five shots in the first half connecting on one for a 1-0 lead at the half.
"(Holly Cram and Whitney Wells) are just playing great together," Bradley said. "Holly is a play-maker and can get the ball in positions for all of our players to make easy goals happen."
Wells, who scored Richmond's first goal, redirected a shot off a penalty corner at the 50:54 mark in the second half to give the Spiders a 2-0 lead. Cram then notched her fifth goal of the season off a penalty corner at the 64:42 point.
Junior Michelle Swartz, on the heals of a shutout last Saturday, moved her no goals allowed streak to 140 minutes by turning away just one shot tonight. The Severna Park, Md., native now 31 shutouts in her three-year career at Richmond.
The Spiders wrap up their weekend in Syracuse with a match against the Orange at J.S. Coyne Field, Sunday at 1 p.m. Syracuse is 0-1 this season after falling to Atlantic 10 Conference member Temple, 4-3, in overtime last weekend.
