UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team again used a seven goal second-half effort, this time against the Saint Joseph's, topping the Hawks, 9-1, at Crenshaw Field. The win, Richmond's third-straight in the conference, was due in part to the Spiders' second-straight seven-goal second half. Richmond, now 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the A-10, scored seven in the second half in the Rhode Island win last Sunday. The loss dropped St. Joe's to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.
The Spiders, and sophomore Shannon Taylor, started out the game by scoring an assisted goal in the ninth minute. Senior Colleen Wevodau entered the ball in from the right wing where Taylor was waiting to score her eighth of the season. Taylor went on to score a total of three goals on the day, the second-straight game the Spiders have had a player record a hat trick. Senior Whitney Wells, who notched two goals today, posted a hat trick Sunday against Rhode Island.
Wells garnered her first goal of the game in the 32nd minute when the Spiders garnered one of six penalty corners in the first half. Sophomore Erin Arthur registered an assist on the play after the Spiders had a miscue on their corner play.
Taylor opened the second half with another goal at the 38:06 mark, and notched an assist just 10 seconds later when junior Heather Wrublesky found the back of the cage. Arthur scored her third of the season in the 45th minute when the Spiders got a penalty corner, but could not convert on the initial shot. Arthur reeled in her own rebound and fired it again for the goal.
Another one of Richmond's seven second-half penalty corners resulted in senior Lesley Russell's first goal of the season. A brilliant corner play had Taylor enter the ball in to Wrublesky who one-timed it to Russell who was coming in off the push. Taylor got her third and final of the game at the 50:23 mark when junior Jodi Murphy crossed a ball inside the circle enabling Taylor to find the far left corner.
SJU got on the board when Nicole Antonini scored her conference leading 12th of the season on a breakaway. After she eluded the Spider backfield, she was able to chip it over senior Michelle Swartz for the goal. Swartz finished the day with 56:57 minutes of play and one save on just three Saint Joseph's shots.
Wells answered the Hawks' goal with her second of the game at the 65:26 mark. She went on the attack after winning the ball in the Saint Joseph's backfield and was able to get past the oncoming keeper for her eighth of the season. Freshman Alex Malatesta, along with Russell and senior Michelle La Force, put the finishing touches on Richmond's win with a goal in the 69th minute off corner.
Richmond will play its final home game of the season Sunday, Oct. 16, when it hosts Temple (8-8, 3-0) at noon. Richmond will celebrate its eight seniors prior to gametime at Crenshaw Field.
