DURHAM, N.C. - Six different Blue Devil players scored as second-ranked Duke rolled over Richmond, 16-4, on Thursday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament for the first time in three years. Katie Chrest led all scorers with four goals and one assist to guide the Blue Devils to their 16th win of the year and the school record for wins in a season. Richmond ends its season with an 9-8 mark, its third winning season under head coach Sue Murphy.
Junior Caroline McGuire led Richmond with a pair of goals and sophomores Ashley Friend and Morghan Vahue both tallied one.
Jessica Adam, Leigh Jester and Caroline Cryer each netted a hat trick to propel the Duke attack, which led 7-2 at the half, and ultimately to the largest margin of victory in NCAA Tournament action since the Blue Devils beat Temple 17-3 in 2001. The Blue Devils out-shot the Spiders by a 34-14 advantage, including an 18-5 margin in the second period.
Jester, who scored all three of her goals in the first four minutes of action, opened fire just 36 seconds into the first half with an unassisted goal and followed with another a minute later off a pass from Kristen Waagbo. After Chrest found the back of the net at the 27:13 mark, Jester followed with her third and final goal of the day.
The freshman duo of Cryer and Jessica Adam combined on a play to increase the lead to 5-0 off the Cryer goal before Caroline McGuire put Richmond on the board with an unassisted goal with 14:52 to play in the first half. Adam and Chrest each fired back goals, followed by another tally from McGuire on a free position shot to send the teams into halftime with a score of 7-2.
Following the intermission, Ashley Friend followed through on a free position shot to pull the Spiders to within four, but the Blue Devils rattled off nine-straight goals, including two each from Waagbo, Chrest and Adam, to stretch the lead to 16-3 with 3:46 to play in the game. Morghan Vahue scored for the Spiders with 1:02 to play to account for the final win.
