UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's lacrosse program earned national recognition from two different organizations following its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship. Head coach Sue Murphy was named Women's Lacrosse Coach of the Week by CSTV (5/9) and junior Caroline McGuire was selected to the womenslacrosse.com Player of the Week Honor Roll (5/9).
Murphy, in her fourth year at Richmond, led the Spiders to their first conference championship, becoming the only #4-seed to ever win the title. Richmond made the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance after receiving the league's automatic invitation. In addition, the Spiders defeated four-time reigning champion, and nationally-ranked, Temple twice this past year, once during the regular season and then in the first round of the conference tournament.
McGuire scored the game-winning goal with 17 seconds remaining in the contest to lead the Spiders to an 11-10 win over top-seed Temple in the opening round of the A-10 Championships. In addition to her final tally, she added four more scores to equal the championship record for single game goals (5). The tournament's Most Outstanding Performer added a trio of goals in the title contest as the Spiders defeated Duquesne 10-8.
