UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Spider field hockey squad picked up its first win of the season Sunday, Aug. 28, at Crenshaw Field by shutting out Radford, 3-0, in front of 204 fans. The win gives Richmond a 1-1 mark in 2005, while Radford drops to 0-1 to begin its season.
On the heels of Saturday's 3-1 loss to American, the Spiders came out alive and garnered five penalty corners and six shots over the first five minutes of the contest. After two-straight penalty corners for the Highlanders, the Spiders got on the board in the 10th minute when sophomore Shannon Taylor took possession of a ball inside the circle then worked to the left for a goal.
Richmond dominated possession throughout the game picking up 12 corners in the first half compared to just two for Radford. The Spiders also took 16 shots in the first and limited the Highlanders to just three the entire game.
Senior Allie Howard notched her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute of play after grabbing her own rebound and following with a shot to the lower left corner. The Spiders headed to halftime with a 2-0 lead and a shot advantage of 16-2.
Richmond head coach Ange Bradley made a switch in goal prior to the start of the second half, replacing senior Michelle Swartz, who stopped one shot in the first half, with freshman Becca Weaver. Weaver came up big at the 47:29 mark when she stopped a penalty-corner shot attempt to preserve the shutout.
Junior newcomer Jodi Murphy gave the Spiders their third goal at the 63:50 mark when she fired a shot from the top of the circle which found the back of the cage.
The shutout was the first for the team this season, after the Spiders, with Swartz in goal blanked 11 opponents in 2004.
Richmond hits the road for its next four games. The Spiders will take part in the Blue Hen Classic, Sept. 3-4 in Newark, Del. Bradley will make her homecoming when her team faces Ohio State at 2:30 p.m., Sept. 3, and takes on her alma-mater Delaware at 2:30 p.m., Sept. 4. Richmond then will travel to cross-town rival VCU, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m., and face Towson at noon, Sept. 11, in Maryland, before returning for a one-game homestand.
