UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Spider field hockey squad let an early lead slip away Sunday at Crenshaw Field against No. 18 William & Mary, but regrouped in the game's second overtime to upset the Tribe, 2-1. Richmond, which used a penalty corner goal in the 93rd minute of action, move to 5-2 with the win, while W&M drops to 4-3 overall.
The Spiders, just one spot out of the STX/NFHCA Top-20 this past week, took their first lead of the game at the 21:32 mark. On the first penalty-corner of the game, senior Lesley Russell pushed out to senior Michelle La Force. La Force then moved the ball to sophomore Shannon Taylor who passed it on to sophomore Erin Arthur for the shot. Arthur placed one along the ground to the right which found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.
The game was very evenly matched throughout as neither team was able to break the game open. Richmond garnered one more corner attempt while the Tribe picked up one in each half. The Spiders outshot William & Mary, 6-2 in the first, but got outshot 6-1 in the second.
The Tribe made the game interesting in the 62nd minute. Maggie Long took the ball off a restart and moved into the top of the circle where she fired it on goal, allowing Katie Broaddus put a stick on it for the game's equalizer. Both teams continued to battle for the remainder of regulation forcing the contest into overtime.
In the first extra period, the Spiders managed to outshoot the Tribe, 3-0, but the W&M keeper, Gwen Hunter turned away all three. The first 15 minute period passed with no score, forcing the second overtime.
The Spiders came out aggressive forcing a total of three penalty corners in the second overtime. Richmond managed one shot on its second opportunity, but it went wide. The third time Richmond was successful. Sophomore Shannon Taylor notched her fifth goal of the season and team-leading fourth game-winner in the 92nd minute. Russell was again on the push and La Force took care of the stop before Taylor was able to send it in to the lower left corner.
Richmond, now 5-3 on the season, and winners of its last four, head to Harrisonburg, Va., Wednesday, Sept. 21 to face James Madison at 7 p.m. Three days later the Spiders return home to host Old Dominion at Crenshaw Field, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m.
