UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond sophomore Shannon Taylor was named Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Player of Week, officials announced Monday afternoon. Taylor, a midfielder for the Spiders, notched the game-winner in Sunday's double overtime victory over No. 18 William & Mary at Crenshaw Field.
Taylor, the Spiders' leader in goals on the season with five, was in on Richmond's first goal against the Tribe. She garnered an assist inside one of the Spiders' two goals-off-corner. After the Tribe forced overtime by knotting the game with just over eight minutes remaining, Taylor and the Spiders came away with a win in the second 15-minute overtime period.
Again on a penalty corner, Taylor took a push from senior Lesley Russell and a stop from senior Michelle La Force for the game-winner. Out of Taylor's five goals in 2005, four of them have been game-winners. Three of the game-winners have come during Richmond's current five-game win streak.
The Spiders will continue their road into conference play when they take on their second ranked opponent in a string of four-straight. No. 15 James Madison will welcome Richmond to Harrisonburg, Va., Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Three days later the Spiders will host No. 9 Old Dominion on Sept. 24, and wrap-up the string by playing at No. 1 Wake Forest, Oct. 2.
