HARRISONBURG, Va. - The 16th-ranked Richmond Spider Field Hockey squad snapped its four-game win streak Wednesday night, falling at No. 19 James Madison, 1-0, in front 100 fans in Harrisonburg, Va. The Spiders, on the heels of a dramatic double-overtime win against then-No. 18 William & Mary, fall to 5-3 on the season, while the Dukes improve to 5-3.
JMU's Baillie Versfeld posted the game's only goal in the 17th minute of action when the Dukes were awarded one of two penalty corners for the game. Ashley Walls was on the push and Maureen Klingler was on the stop, as the Dukes notched their 15th goal-off-corner of the season.
The Spiders outshot JMU, 8-4, in the game and picked up six corners compared to just two for the Dukes. James Madison's goalkeeper Lori Amaco had to turn away just one shot from Richmond. The Spiders' keeper, senior Michelle Swartz, saw just one shot the entire evening, the game-winning goal.
Richmond has now gone 1-1 against ranked teams in its string of four consecutive against Top-20 opponents. The Spiders topped then-No. 18 William & Mary, 2-1, Sunday in double-overtime, before dropping tonight's contest. Richmond will welcome No. 7 Old Dominion to Crenshaw Field Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. for its third-straight against a ranked opponent. The Spiders then travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face top-ranked Wake Forest, Oct. 2, before opening up Atlantic 10 play against UMass, Oct. 7. The Demon Deacons have won each of the last three National Championships.
