UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - No. 7 ranked Old Dominion continued its hex over the University of Richmond, handing the Spiders a 5-2 setback on Saturday at Crenshaw Field.
This was the third-straight game against a ranked opponent for the No. 16 ranked Spiders (5-4). Richmond defeated then No. 18 William & Mary 2-1 in overtime last Sunday and then lost to No. 19 James Madison 1-0 on Wednesday.
Old Dominion (5-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half, which proved to be too much for the Spiders to overcome. Richmond did outscore the Lady Monarchs 2-1 in the second half with a pair of goals from seniors Allie Howard and Ashley Barnes. Howard put the Spiders on the scoreboard with 13:07 to play when she weaved her way through the Old Dominion defense and smashed a shot from just inside the circle that found the back of the cage.
Howard's first goal of the season cut the lead to 4-1, but Old Dominion got that goal back when the Lady Monarchs were awarded a penalty stroke and Janelle Engle converted it for a 5-1 lead with just under 10 minutes to play. Richmond continued to put the pressure on, and on a penalty corner, sophomore Shannon Taylor took a shot that was saved, but Barnes was there to knock in the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Barnes' goal cut the gap to 5-2 with 7:13 remaining in the game, but that was as close as the Spiders would get. Old Dominion held a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in penalty corners. Each team scored a goal on a penalty corner.
Old Dominion's Mary Cate Gordon made three saves, while Richmond freshman Becca Weaver made six saves in 48 minutes of action.
Richmond will play its fourth-straight game against a ranked opponent when they travel to No. 1 ranked Wake Forest on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. The Spiders' next home game is their Atlantic 10 opener against Massachusetts on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m.
