UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's lacrosse squad gathered this past Sunday at head coach Sue Murphy's house to celebrate and reflect on its most successful season yet, as the players received their 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship rings.
Joined by the current 2006-07 team, alums Caroline McGuire and Allison Nuzzi, Nuzzi's parents, current family members and strength coach Joe Maher, the Spiders enjoyed cake, good company and a ring ceremony.
"Thanks to all the parents, clearly our biggest fans, that were able to join us for this day," stated Murphy. "Ken and Susan Nuzzi were present, along with their daughter and two-time captain Alli Nuzzi. Caroline McGuire, the 2006 A-10 Player of Year and All-American, came down from Connecticut to join us. Joe Maher our strength coach was also there to support our team, as always. It was a great day for Richmond Lacrosse."
The Spiders, led by fifth-year head coach Murphy, concluded their best season yet in 2006, highlighted by their first-ever regular season A- 10 title after dominating the league with a 6-1 record, as well as their second consecutive A-10 Championship and NCAA appearance. The Spiders also garnered a program best 16 wins with a 16-4 mark on the season, including a win over powerhouse Virginia, an 11-game win streak, and a five-week stint in the Top 10, when they were ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation, the highest the Spiders have ever been ranked.
Individual Spiders swept A-10 honors, as well as national honors as Murphy was named the A-10 Coach of the Year, Caroline McGuire was named the Offensive Player of the Year, as well as the A-10 Championships MVP, and Allison Nuzzi and Mandy Friend on the All-Championship team as the Spiders captured the A-10 title. McGuire and Mandy Friend then went on to earn All-American honors.
"It is never to be taken for granted to have the opportunity to get a team together to celebrate their successes and to be presented with A-10 Championship rings," continued Murphy. "The 2006 team, without a doubt, broke many Richmond records and had some great memories along the way as well. It was clearly a break-through year for our program and hopefully the start of many more to come.
"Thanks to all of the alums who have helped catapult this program into a top team both within the A-10 and on the national scene," said Murphy. "We intend to keep building this program and I am confident that this 2007 team would very much like another championship ring!"
