UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 19th-ranked Richmond field hockey squad extended its streak to four-straight shutouts by blanking La Salle, 6-0, Sunday at Crenshaw Field. The win helped the Spiders to a record of 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 while La Salle falls to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Spiders have now shutout four-straight opponents dating back to Sept. 30, as sophomore Becca Weaver and freshman Jacki Raithel have combined for three team and one solo shutout in those games. Raithel earned the first shutout of her career Sunday by stopping one of La Salle's three total shots. Richmond also extended its win streak in regular-season Atlantic 10 games to 28, and have now won 35-straight over A-10 foes.
Freshman Megan Thompson used a great feed inside the circle from junior Erin Arthur to get the Spiders on the board in the 32nd minute. Arthur used a pass from senior Heather Wrublesky to insert a ball from the right side to the far post. Thompson was there for the touch to get it past the Explorers keeper, Ellen Axelsen. Axelsen finished the day by allowing six goals, but came up big several times for La Salle; making 16 saves on the day.
Thirty seconds into the second half freshman Lindsey Conrad scored the first of her three goals on the day on a deflection off the keeper. Conrad went on to use assists from Wrublesky and junior Shannon Taylor to record the second three-goal game of her career.
In the 48th minute Taylor got in on the scoring with the first of her two goals off corner. The first, which was untouched to the left post, had assists from senior Jodi Murphy on the push and freshman Jess Weidner on the stop. The second, which came in the 68th minute, deflected off Axelsen to the top of cage and had assists from junior Tara Kelly on the push and Weidner on the stop.
Taylor ended the day with five points to place her at 116 for her career; ranking third behind Heather Rice and Dawn Reyerson. Her two goals bumped her to 48 in her three-year career and also place her behind Rice and Reyerson on the all-time list.
The Spiders, who have now won four-straight, hit the road for four-straight conference games beginning next weekend. Friday, Oct. 13, Richmond will be in Kingston, R.I., to face the Rhode Island Rams at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, the Spiders will make the trek to Amherst, Mass., to face the UMass Minutewomen at noon.
