Olean, N.Y. - Although up 4-0 in the first four and a half minutes of play and despite senior Caroline McGuire's career-high five goals, the ninth-ranked University of Richmond women's lacrosse team was unable to continue its winning ways in Olean, N.Y. as it suffered a 12-10 loss to the nation's only remaining unbeaten team, St. Bonaventure (12-0, 3-0 in A-10). While McGuire netted five goals, senior Allison Nuzzi, juniors Morghan Vahue and Ashley Friend, sophomore Samantha Tract, and freshman Mandy Friend added one apiece in the Spiders' efforts as they dropped to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in A-10 play.
In just 3:03 of play, McGuire had already put in her first of five goals; the first off a free position attempt and the next off assists from Nuzzi and M. Friend. Tract then converted a free position shot for the final goal of the Spiders' early four-goal run. The Bonnies then followed with three unanswered goals before Richmond's M. Friend would drop in a free position shot to secure a 5-2 Richmond advantage at the 17:14 mark.
The Bonnies then netted three more unanswered goals to take a one-goal lead over the Spiders; however, Richmond's Nuzzi assisted McGuire on her fourth goal of the afternoon with just over one minute before halftime to knot the game at 6-6.
The Bonnies came out in the second half and took an immediate three-goal advantage in the first five minutes before the Spiders' McGuire and Vahue would respond with unassisted goals to close the game to a one-goal differential. Just 10 seconds following Vahue's goal, the Bonnies went on a two-goal run to take an 11-8 lead with 15:47 left to play. Within a minute and a half, Richmond's A. Friend and Nuzzi each put in a goal in effort to keep the Spiders in the game.
The Bonnies netted one more goal to secure a two-goal lead, and although there was still 9:44 remaining on the clock, the Spiders were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and ended their eleven-game winning streak right there in Olean, N.Y. with a 12-10 loss to the Bonnies.
Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg finished the contest with 12 saves after facing 24 shots on goal. M. Friend led all Spiders with six ground balls and five draw controls, while teammate Tract followed with five ground balls.
The Spiders continue action next week as they head back up north to Philadelphia, Pa. to play the La Salle Explorers on April 23 at noon.
