UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Jenna Hubbard and senior Caroline McGuire each netted hat tricks as they led the ninth-ranked University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 13-2 triumph over the Temple Owls (4-6) in their Atlantic 10 home opener on Friday afternoon at First Market Stadium. Although the Atlantic 10 head coaches picked the Temple Owls to finish ahead of the Spiders in a preseason forecast, a determined squad of ninth-ranked Spiders set out to prove to the Atlantic 10 who would win in a head-to-head battle.
While McGuire and Hubbard each scored three, Ashley Friend and Sara Allen got two a piece, and Morghan Vahue, Mandy Friend, and Claire Cunnif added one goal each as the Spiders (10-2) earned their ninth consecutive win and their third-straight over the Owls.
On her way to one goal and four assists, Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week and A-10 Rookie of the Week M. Friend ignited the Spiders into scoring action at the 28:05 mark with an unassisted goal. She then assisted Hubbard on her first of three goals for the afternoon to give the Spiders a 2-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the game.
A free position shot by Temple's Whitney Richards closed the gap to a one goal differential; however, McGuire netted her first of three goals at the 12:00 mark which would spark nine more Richmond goals before Temple would get their second and final goal of the contest.
Vahue and Hubbard each slipped a goal in before the half to give the Spiders a 5-1 advantage at halftime. While McGuire followed with two more in the second half, Hubbard converted a free position shot, A. Friend put in two goals, Cunniff added one, and Allen dropped one in as the Spiders took a 12-2 lead with 8:14 left to play. After remaining scoreless for almost 38 minutes, Temple's Casey Cech converted a free position shot before the Richmond's Allen would put in the final goal of the contest as the Spiders took a 13-2 victory.
On her way to seven saves in goal for the Spiders, Jackie Swansburg played a solid game in goal, with the two goals allowed serving as her record for least amount of goals allowed in a Spider uniform.
The Spiders will continue A-10 play on Sunday, April 9 when they will host the Massachusetts Minutewomen at noon. Live coverage will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
