UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Seniors Caroline McGuire and Sara Allen put on a show for fans at First Market Stadium on Sunday afternoon as they each netted four goals to lead the ninth-ranked University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a dominating 15-5 victory over the Massachusetts Minutewomen (3-9, 0-2 in A-10). Morghan Vahue scored two goals, while Mandy and Ashley Friend, Samantha Tract, Claire Cunniff, and Katy Smullen added one apiece as the Spiders, now 11-2 overall and 3-0 in A-10 play, earned their tenth consecutive win of the season and third-straight victory over the Minutewomen.
The Spiders put four balls in the back of the net in the first 10 minutes of play before the Minutewomen would put a mark on the scoreboard. McGuire sparked the Spiders into action with a goal in the first 33 seconds of play off an assist from A. Friend before Vahue would assist Friend on her own goal. McGuire then netted her second goal of the game, which Tract then followed with one of her own.
Massachusetts' Kaytlin McCormick put in a pair of goals; however, just six seconds after her second goal, Richmond's Allen responded with a goal off an assist from A. Friend. Vahue put in another Spider goal at the 12:28 mark to give the Spiders a 6-2 advantage before McCormick would put in her third goal of the contest off a free position shot.
Just 36 seconds later, Allen scored her second goal off an assist from Allison Nuzzi that was the start of an eight-goal run for the Spiders. Cunniff, and M. Friend each followed with unassisted goals, while Vahue converted a free position shot to give the Spiders a 10-3 lead. In the final 5:13 of play, McGuire put in a pair of goals, the first unassisted and the second off an assist from A. Friend; and Allen notched her final two goals of the contest off assists from A. Friend and Nuzzi.
The Minutewomen scored a goal with three minutes left of play, which Richmond's Smullen answered with a goal of her own off an assist from M. Friend. With just one second left, the Minutewomen's Kathleen Typadis put the final goal of the game in the net to close their loss to a 10-goal differential.
Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg once again held strong for Richmond with seven saves in the net, facing 22 shots throughout the contest.
The Spiders will now travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a contest with the Duquesne Dukes on April 14 at 4:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
