WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The 19th-ranked Richmond field hockey squad combined with No. 17 William and Mary to score eight goals Saturday afternoon at Busch Field in Williamsburg, Va., but the Tribe claimed a 5-3 victory over Richmond. The Spiders even their mark at 3-3 on the season with the loss, while the Tribe improves to 6-1 with its first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
The Spiders found the scoring column first in the fifth minute of play. After generating most of the offense in the opening minutes of the contest, including a pair of penalty corners and two shots on cage, the Spiders scored off their second penalty corner chance. Junior Tara Kelly took the corner and found midfielder Ines Reimundes, who tallied her first goal of the season from the right side of the circle.
W&M answered less than five minutes later when Becky Van Zee carried the ball into the area, before hitting a shot on cage. Sophomore goalkeeper, Becca Weaver, turned the attempt away with a kick save, but it came back out to Van Zee who slid the ball forward across the crease to senior forward Maggie Long, who pushed it in from in front.
Richmond had a flurry of attempts on the W&M cage before finally retaking the lead in the 18th minute. Senior Heather Wrublesky attempted a shot from the right side of the area, and W&M goalkeeper Gwen Hunter made a diving stab to deflect the shot. It ended up on the stick of freshman Sydney Leone, who slid a shot toward the goal which Hunter could not get to. Redshirt freshman back Kaitlin Johnson was back and able to clear the ball off the line for the defensive save. Richmond broke through once again on the ensuing penalty corner. Following the corner push-in from Kelly and the stick stop from freshman Jess Weidner, junior Shannon Taylor ripped a shot into the left side of the net from the top of the circle, giving Richmond a 2-1 cushion.
W&M drew even thanks to Kim Hedley's first of two-straight goals in the 23rd minute. The junior put the Tribe in front for good with another goal just five minutes later.
William & Mary's Gina Cimarelli scored just 39 seconds into the second half, pushing the Tribe lead to 4-2.
Richmond did not go quietly as it pulled back within one goal in the 47th minute. After carrying the ball along the end line, sophomore Alex Malatesta sent a pass across the circle from right to left. Freshman Lena Voelmle found the back of the cage with a strike into the left side of the goal from 12 yards out, just past the diving keeper. It marked Voelmle's first goal of her career, and it came during her first career appearance.
The Tribe answered quickly pushing the lead back to a decisive 5-3 margin, just 45 seconds after Voelmle's goal.
Richmond had four shots and four penalty corners over the final 10-minute span, but could not get one past the Tribe keeper.
The Spiders return to Crenshaw Field, Sept. 22, to face VCU at 4 p.m. Richmond will be looking to defend its City Championship after topping the Rams, 1-0, in 2005 at Cary Street Field.
