No. 19 Spiders Looking For 2-0 Start Saturday Against Princeton

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 19th-ranked Richmond Spider Field Hockey team, already 1-0 on the year, will welcome Princeton to Crenshaw Field, Saturday, Sept. 2. Game time against the Tigers is slated for 1 p.m. Richmond is coming off a 2-1 win over Towson to open the 2006 season, while Princeton will be playing in its first game of the 2006 season.
Led by a two-goal performance from junior Shannon Taylor, the Spiders topped the visiting Towson Tigers, 2-1, at Crenshaw Field. Taylor notched the first goal of the season for Richmond in the ninth minute of play, then helped the Spiders regain the lead with her second in the 44th minute of action.
Princeton is coming off an Ivy League title in 2005, after finishing the conference season 7-0. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Duke, 2-1, in double-overtime in the first round. Princeton returns their leading goal-scorer from a season ago in Paige Schmidt, as well as their mainstay in cage from 2005, Allison Nemeth. Schmidt garnered a team-best 11 goals, and led the squad with a total of 29 points. Nemeth logged more than 1,000 minutes in cage for the Tigers, and held a goals-against average of 1.61.
Richmond is 1-3 in the all-time series with the Tigers, which dates back to the 1995 season. The Spiders broke a string of three-straight losses in the 2004 season, by topping Princeton, 1-0, in Princeton, N.J. Richmond has managed just three goals, while the Tigers have posted 19 goals in the all-time series which spans just four games.
The Spiders will hit the road for the first time in the 2006 season following the game against Princeton. Richmond will travel east to face both Michigan and Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. The Spiders will take on the Wolverines, Friday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m., then play Old Dominion at 3 p.m., the following day, Sept. 9.
