UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Spider Field Hockey team, 3-3 on the season, will play a pair of games over three days this weekend beginning with a contest against crosstown rival VCU (1-6), Sept. 22, at Crenshaw Field at 4 p.m. Two days later, Sept. 24, the Spiders hit the road to face No. 11 American (6-2) in Washington, D.C., at 1 p.m.
Richmond, just one votes out of the National Top-20, is led by junior Shannon Taylor's 11 points including a team-high five goals and one assist. Taylor ranks 38th in the country with a 1.38 point-per-game average, while her 0.83 goal-per-game average is 27th-best in the country. The Midlothian, Va., native is among the top three in both categories in the Atlantic 10 rankings, and is slowly climbing the Spiders' all-time career rankings. She is now sixth all-time with 33 career goals and ranks fourth all-time with 15 career assists. Her career point total of 81 is sixth-best all-time at Richmond.
The Spiders trail in the all-time City Championships series with VCU, 12-19, but have won three-straight and 10 of the last 12 against the Rams. Richmond leads the all-time series with American, 15-11, but has not topped the Eagles since the 2003 season. The Spiders' last win over American in Washington, D.C., came in 1997.
After the Spiders travel to Washington, D.C., they will return to Crenshaw Field, Sept. 27, to face No. 7 Virginia at 4:30 p.m. Richmond topped the Cavaliers last season, 1-0, in Charlottesville, Va.
