UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 19th-ranked Richmond field hockey squad had an answer for each of No. 8 Virginia's first three goals, but could not regroup after a goal in the 43rd minute falling, 5-3, Wednesday at Crenshaw Field. Richmond, 5-4 in 2006, tied the Wahoos at halftime, 2-2, and answered an early goal in the second half, but UVA, 8-3 on the year, had two more for the win.
Virginia, which managed just four shots in the first half, made two of them count with its first just one minute into the game. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute on what turned out to be Lindsay O'Bannon's first of three goals on the day.
The Spiders, who outshot Virginia, 10-4, in the first half, came back with two-straight goals to tie it up at two apiece. In the 12th minute, junior Shannon Taylor took a pass inside the circle from the left, made one Wahoo miss, then blasted a shot to the lower left corner for her ninth of the season. Freshman Lindsey Conrad was responsible for the game-tying goal in the 25th minute of play. Conrad was able to move left-to-right in front of the goal and beat the keeper for her second of the season and first on the day.
O'Bannon pushed UVA in front in the 40th minute when she tipped a shot initially fired from the right by Mia Link. Conrad answered less than a minute later for the Spiders when she attacked from the left and nailed a shot to the left corner while falling down.
Virginia took its final lead in the 43rd minute when it scored off penalty corner, one of its four garnered on the day. O'Bannon later added her third goal of the game in the 60th minute of play.
The Spiders recorded four corners in each half, while limiting UVA to just one in the first half and three in the second. Sophomore Becca Weaver turned away three shots on the day, while UVA's Katherine Blair made one save.
Richmond continues its homestand this weekend with back-to-back games against Radford and Davidson. The Spiders will host Highlanders, Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m., then welcome the Wildcats to Crenshaw Field, Sunday, Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
