UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Former First-Team All-Atlantic 10 back Jodi Murphy has joined the Richmond field hockey coaching staff as an assistant coach, first-year head coach Gina Lucido announced.
After starting 37 of 38 games over two seasons at Indiana, Murphy transferred to Richmond to join her sister Jill, the 2002 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year who was an assistant coach for the Spiders.
Murphy started all 22 games for Richmond as a junior in 2005, earning Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 honors as the Spiders won the Atlantic 10 Championship and played in the NCAA Tournament.
As a senior captain last fall, Murphy started 20 games and earned First-Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. She was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team as she helped lead the Spiders to another conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance.
Lucido was an assistant coach at Indiana during Murphy's two years in Bloomington and hired her after her graduation from Richmond this spring.
"Jodi Murphy will be a significant part of the next chapter in Richmond's esteemed program history," Lucido said. "I was privileged to mentor Jodi during her time at Indiana and continued to support her successes in her great career at Richmond. It seemed fitting that our passion for impacting people through athletics culminated in my hire at Richmond and Jodi following in the footsteps of sister Jill as an assistant coach. I believe our partnership in philosophy and faith will combine to lead this program in continued excellence."
The Williamsburg, Va. native was a four-year starter and team captain at Jamestown High, where she was a two-time First-Team Virginia All-State selection and Virginia State High School League AA Player of the Year honors in 2002. She participated in the USFHA A-Camp in 2003-04 and was a part of the National Field Hockey Futures National Championship from 1999-02.
Murphy's sister Jill was an assistant coach for the Spiders for three years (2003-05).
