UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team gave up a goal with 6:09 remaining in a 1-0 loss to Delaware on Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
The Blue Hens (3-0), who defeated No. 13 ranked Ohio State last weekend, tallied Saturday's only goal when Casey Howard found the back of the cage with 6:09 remaining in the game.
This was the second-straight one-goal loss for Richmond, which suffered a 4-3 setback to No. 8 ranked Virginia on Thursday.
Delaware held a 10-4 advantage in shots, but the Spider defense kept the Blue Hens off the scoreboard for the first 63 minutes.
"It was a competitive, well fought game," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "To win the game you have to put the ball in the net and Delaware did a great job of shutting us down in our attacking 25. We were never able to generate any momentum in there and play to our strengths. That's something we're definitely to get back to and make adjustments. Delaware got the goal. It's really unfortunate to not pull out the win."
Richmond junior goalkeeper Becca Weaver made four saves in goal.
"Our defense was really good today, we played a great game," sophomore Jess Weidner said. "Becca was a great force back there, she kept us organized and came up with big saves. Everyone was working really hard. We just need to get things organized and we'll be fine."
"Jess played out of her mind and really held the defense together," Lucido said. "Becca in goal and Jess at center back are doing a great job."
The Spiders (1-3) return to action on Friday night when they head downtown to face city-rival VCU at 7 p.m.
"Next up we have VCU our cross town rivals," Lucido said. "The Spiders are going to come back."
Richmond returns to Crenshaw Field to host Miami of Ohio, Sept. 9 at noon.
