
No. 8 James Madison Proves Too Much For Spiders

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Five of the Richmond field hockey team's six losses have come to teams currently ranked in the NFHCA Top-20 Poll after a 7-0 loss to No. 8 James Madison on Friday night.
Richmond was down just 2-0 at the half, but James Madison scored three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half and went on to post its fourth shutout in six matches this season.
JMU improved to 5-1 with the victory while winning its third in a row. The Dukes entered the contest leading the nation with 0.60 shutouts per game and a .925 save percentage, and raised those numbers to 0.67 and .929 respectively. They also lowered the second-ranked goals against average in the nation from 0.55 to 0.47.
The game-winning goal came eight minutes into the match from sophomore Meghan Bain. It was Bain's third goal of the season and second game winner. Junior Jenny Eakin scored with seven minutes to go in the half to put the Dukes up 2-0 at the break. The goal was assisted by junior Lauren Walls.
JMU poured on three goals in the first eight minutes in the second half. Freshman Randi Segear scored just 1:10 into the period with an assist from junior Ashley Walls. Lauren Walls added a goal seven minutes into the half, and sister Melissa Walls scored just 30 seconds later from senior Lauren Stefaniak.
Stefaniak picked up her second assist of the night and third of the season by setting up freshman Becky Hilgar on her first career goal with the Dukes in the 52nd minute of the contest. Fellow freshman Dolores de Rooij scored unassisted for her second goal of the season with two minutes remaining.
Sophomore Kelsey Cutchins, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, had two saves while playing the first 43 minutes in goal. Senior Merel Broekhuizen played the final 27. The two combined on a shutout for the third time this season.
Richmond junior Rebecca Weaver played the first 43 minutes in goal for the Spiders with six saves. Sophomore Jacki Raithel played the final 27 minutes and also made six saves.
The Spiders (1-6) return to action on Sunday at Towson for a noon start.
