OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Richmond field hockey team overcame a 2-0 first-half deficit to tie the game, but Towson regained the lead just three minutes later and added two second half goals in a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon.
Towson took a 2-0 lead just 6:56 into the match, but Richmond junior Alex Malatesta scored the Spiders' first goal to cut the gap to 2-1 in the game's 14th minute. It was Malatesta's second goal of the season.
Sophomore Megan Thomas followed with her second goal of the season six minutes later on an assist from senior Tara Kelly, tying the game at 2-2.
Towson (3-3) took the lead back three minutes later when Kristie Blumer scored her second goal of the game on a rebound off a shot that hit the post.
With 22:51 left in the second half, the Tigers extended their lead to 4-2 and upped that lead to 5-2 with 16:50 remaining.
"Today was a step forward for the Spider program in the face of the adversity of the beginning chapter of this season," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "The team really had a great first half, found connection, and scored two great goals. That definitely was a glimmer of what can come in our unrelenting mission in preparing to win an A-10 Championship."
Richmond goalkeeper Becca Weaver made a career-high 14 saves in goal.
The Spiders return to action next Sunday when they play at Duke at 1 p.m.
