PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior Megan Thompson continued her scoring tear with two goals, including her fourth game-winning goal in the last four games as the Richmond field hockey team defeated La Salle 4-1 Friday.
The Spiders four-game winning streak has brought them to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10. Prior to Richmond's four-game winning streak, the Spiders had played seven of eight games against ranked opponents. Seven of Richmond's nine losses have come to ranked teams.
Thompson, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, has scored eight goals in the last five games, including seven goals in the last four contests. She has three multi-goal games in the last four outings and leads the team with 10 goals and 24 points.
The Gap, Pa. native currently is tied for ninth on the school's all-time list for career goals with 23. Thompson also had an assist on sophomore Dani Pycroft's second-half goal, giving her 18 points in the last five games. Thompson moved into 10th on Richmond's all-time list with 54 career points.
"The forward play of Megan Thompson and Dani Pycroft's helped fuel the team in a big way and paved the way for our success," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "Today was one of our best team efforts this season. There were many variables that could have affected us in a negative manner but the Spiders came focused and ready to play. Sarah Blyth-wood was the force in our attacking momentum as she continually found the forwards with superb passing."
Blyth-Wood had assists on both of Thompson's goals, while sophomore Hannah Hess scored Richmond's fourth goal on an assist from Natalie Simon as time was running out.
Richmond had a 3-0 lead until La Salle's Kara Harpel scored an unassisted goal in the 61st minute. Richmond senior goalkeeper Becca Weaver made 11 saves in net.
"The backfield play by Hannah Hess was some of our best as they remained poised under the pressure of fiery LaSalle forwards," Lucido said. "Becca Weaver was equally cool under second half LaSalle pressure and made some big saves for the Spiders. I am very proud of this team, they are developing into a force.
Richmond returns to action on Sunday when the Spiders play at West Chester at 12 p.m.
