WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Freshman Katelin Peterson scored a school-record four goals in a span of 10:06 as the Richmond field hockey team defeated West Chester 5-1 Sunday for the Spiders fifth-straight win.
Peterson, who entered the game with six goals, moved into a tie for the team lead in goals when she went on a scoring spree starting in the 27th minute. She scored an unassisted goal to give the Spiders a 2-0 lead, then tallied off an assist from Sarah Schrott with 4:05 remaining in the first half and less than three minutes later she made it 4-0 off an assist from senior Alex Malatesta.
Just 1:47 into the second half, Peterson struck again for an unassisted goal which gave her 10 in tallies in her rookie season. Her four-goal performance ties for the school's single-game record.
"Katelin Peterson had some standout play in the circle," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "This was well deserved success for her as she has been dedicated to working on her game outside of practice."
Richmond has won five-straight games to improve to 8-9 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders had played seven of eight games against ranked opponents before their current five-game winning streak.
While Massachusetts clinched the Atlantic 10 regular-season title on Sunday with a victory over Temple in penalty strokes, Richmond clinched the second seed in the conference tournament.
The Spiders still have two regular-season games remaining, including an Atlantic 10 match at Saint Louis on Saturday. The 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship is Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8 at Temple.
"We're on our way," Lucido said. "The entire season has been built around preparation for the A-10 Tournament. In the final weeks of our season this program is gaining momentum and seeing the fruits of their hard work. Every Spider contributed today, which made the victory that much sweeter."
Sophomore Dani Pycroft scored her third goal of the season on an assist by Malatesta to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead 25:18 into the match. That started the bombardment of Spider goals as Peterson connected on her first goal just 1:23 later. By the time she scored her fourth of the day, the Spiders had scored five goals in 11:29 of game time.
Malatesta's two assists give her 51 career points, which is just two shy of the 10th spot on Richmond's all-time career list.
Richmond held West Chester to just five shots and one goal coming in the 40th minute.
"The defense was strong," Lucido said. "Emily Straniero has been such a consistent player in our backfield and continues to make big plays a freshman. I am so proud of these excellent young women."
