ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Richmond field hockey team defeated Saint Louis 9-0 Saturday to win its sixth-straight game and conclude conference play at 5-1.
The Spiders improved to 9-9 overall and have one regular-season game left tomorrow against Ohio on a neutral site in St. Louis.
Richmond had already clinched the second-seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, to be played next weekend at Temple. The Spiders will play third-seeded Temple, who defeated Saint Joseph's 2-1 on Saturday. This is the sixth time in nine years as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference that Richmond has finished either first or second in the league.
Richmond's nine goals on Saturday are tied for the third-highest single-game scoring total in school history, three goals short of the school record of 12. Sophomore Dani Pycroft and freshman Katelin Peterson had two goals apiece, while seniors Sarah Schrott and Alex Malatesta, junior Adrian Pickar and sophomores Hannah Hess and Sara Reese each had goals.
Peterson, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player and Rookie of the Week, has six goals in the last two games and now leads the conference with 29 points. She leads the team and is second in the Atlantic 10 with 12 goals and is second on the team with five assists after recording one on Saturday.
Pycroft had her first-career multi-goal game and now has five goals this season and 14 points. Malatesta's 21st-career goal ties her for 10th on Richmond's all-time list and with 53-career points she is in a three-way tie for 10th on the all-time points list with teammate Megan Thompson and 2006 graduate Heather Wrublesky.
Richmond will play Ohio in the final regular-season game of the season on Sunday at 12 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo.
