UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team gave No. 16 ranked Princeton a good fight before losing 2-1 in the home opener at Crenshaw Field.
The Spiders trailed 2-0 after Princeton's second goal of the game with 23:06 remaining in the game, but Richmond freshman Katelin Peterson pulled the Spiders within one when she scored her third goal in as many games with 8:19 to play.
Richmond (1-2) had some chances to tie the game in the closing minutes, but could not score again.
"Princeton is a really good team, I'm so proud of what our team did today," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "Our team played hard from start to finish today. We've been trying to work for a consistent identity, and trying to lay it on the line. Every single one of them did that today."
Richmond goalkeeper Becca Weaver made seven saves in net, keeping the Spiders in the game.
"She was making saves that we were just saying `wow' about," Lucido said. "As a leader, both mentally, physically and by her play, she was able to step up and show the team where she wanted to take them."
Peterson, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after scoring goals in each of her first two collegiate games, continued her goal-scoring streak in the second half Friday.
"She just has a fire and a passion and a belief," Lucido said. "She's exceeding the expectations I had for her."
The Spiders return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Columbia at Crenshaw Field.
