UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team took a 1-0 lead into the half and appeared to have control of the game against Columbia, but the Lions would score two unanswered goals in the second half to take a 2-1 win on Sunday at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond freshman Katelin Peterson put the Spiders on the board 9:46 into the game when she gathered a ball that was on the left wing and blasted a shot from just inside the circle that found the back of the cage. Peterson, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, has now scored a goal in each of her first four collegiate games.
The Spiders continued to control play for the remainder of the half and seemed on their way to victory until Columbia's Jackie Kltasky scored her first goal of the season with 5:14 into the second half.
"Our team is in desperate need of being able to consistently compete as a unit," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "It was just very frustrating. They clearly showed through the first half of play that they could dominate. Our press and pressure were working."
After the game-tying goal, momentum turned to Columbia and the game remained deadlocked for just over five minutes. Ariel Leon tallied her first goal of the season in the 46th minute to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.
"We all know that's why you play the game because a team can seize an opportunity and Columbia did that," Lucido said. "They found a way to get the ball in the back of the net."
The Spiders did have several scoring chances in the second half, forcing Columbia Gena Miller to make four second-half saves. Richmond senior goalkeeper Becca Weaver made three saves.
Richmond returns to action next Saturday when the Spiders play at Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
