UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team out-shot No. 11 ranked James Madison 12-6, but the Dukes converted three of their four penalty corners for a 3-0 win Sunday at Crenshaw Field.
Despite taking twice as many shots and twice as many corners (8-4), the Spiders were unable to get the ball into the back of the net.
James Madison scored all three of its goal on similarly executed corner plays where Lindsay Cutchins inserted the ball to Vivien Konijnendijk and Dolores de Rooij blasted the ball into the back of the cage.
"We played well today, but we just couldn't put it in the back of net," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "We had our chances, but we just didn't score."
Richmond goalkeeper Jacki Raithel made two saves in net, while James Madison keeper Kelsey Cutchins had five.
The Spiders dropped to 6-7 on the season with all seven losses coming to teams ranked or receiving votes in the NFHCA Top-20 Poll.
Richmond wraps up its home schedule next weekend, hosting La Salle on Friday and West Chester on Sunday for Senior Day.
